"The long-delayed decision to list the bear as a threatened species may prove less of an impediment to industries along the Alaskan coast than many environmentalists had hoped. While further protecting the polar bear from direct or immediate threats -- like hunting -- the Interior Department added stipulations, seldom invoked under the act, that will make it relatively easy for oil and gas exploration and development activities to proceed." There's always a catch, isn't there?

When I was a kid, I imagined living in an abandoned school, and having a different room for every thing and every day. Of course, then I wasn't worried about such things as heating bills or repair costs! In this exploration of abandoned buildings and their rehabilitation or demolition, the story of this school has a happy ending: as apartments for senior citizens.

A blog about artists of the Midwest, the Southwest, the Deep South, and the High Plains, with many interesting new artists you probably won't be familiar with.

Everyone who's looked at my pages knows I'm a big mystery novel fan, and now here we have a mystery novel evolving right within the pages of SU. Of course, this could turn out to be pretty hokey, but initial indications--given the quality of the writing of the first two installments--are that it won't be. I for one will be checking back regularly to follow the clues.

edosan.stumbleupon.com [edosan.stumbleupon.com] has introduced me to these New Yorker short stories, each one chosen from stories published in the New York and read by another writer published in the New Yorker. The stories are good, but the best part is the discussion by the writer who read about why he chose the story he chose, and what he sees in the story, which often is something I hadn't seen in the story. Plus they're just the right length to listen to on my commute to work.
