When I was a kid, I imagined living in an abandoned school, and having a different room for every thing and every day. Of course, then I wasn't worried about such things as heating bills or repair costs! In this exploration of abandoned buildings and their rehabilitation or demolition, the story of this school has a happy ending: as apartments for senior citizens.

"Forest ReLeaf of Missouri was founded in 1993 as the local response to Global ReLeaf - an international project of American Forests to combat global warming through tree planting. Today, Forest ReLeaf is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring volunteer efforts in planting and caring for trees and forests, particularly those in our cities and towns." Even if you're not in Missouri, there's lots of good information here on planting and caring for trees.

In Missouri today (and I'm sure in Kansas) there's a lot of talk about a "border war," as MU and KU prepare to battle it out for the number-one football ranking. But today's border war is (thankfully) a mere shadow of the truly bloody "border wars" that predated the civil war. The guerrilla conflict that raged along the Kansas-Missouri border from 1856 to 1865 was the most bitter in American history, making that frontier the first battleground in the struggle over slavery and the most explosive political fault line in the United States, foreshadowing the war that would tear apart the entire nation. The resulting bitterness is the milieu in which Jesse James operated after the war, and which can still be felt today in some communities and families.
